There are a few things that should not happen for you during a weight loss journey. You are probably thinking you know some of these. Maybe you are thinking that gaining weight should not happen when you are trying to lose weight. Maybe you think that eating carbs, or sugar, shouldn’t happen when losing weight. Maybe you think that having a cocktail or a beer shouldn’t happen when losing weight. I am sorry to tell you, but……if you are thinking those things, you are WRONG! Let’s talk about 5 things that actually should not happen during a weight loss journey.
LOSING WEIGHT FAST: If you think you should lose 30 pounds a month, you are so wrong. Sustainable weight loss takes a lot of time. Think more along the lines of 6-9 months to see truly noticeable, visible results. You will see some small visible results before then, but BIG progress? Months.
LOSING WEIGHT EVERY SINGLE WEEK: Sure, if you have a lot of weight to lose, when you first start your journey, you may see anywhere from 1-3 pounds per week lost. But this doesn’t last for long. As you lose more body fat, your weight loss slows accordingly. Some weeks you may lose no weight at all according to the scale. Some weeks you may see a small gain on the scale even if you were 110% on point with your diet and exercise. That is normal and should be expected. Weight loss is not linear. It is like a zig zag line with lots of ups and downs. What matters is the average loss over time.
ALWAYS BEING MOTIVATED: You will not always be motivated to workout or eat the meals you have planned for yourself. You aren’t supposed to be. Some days you will have to literally pay someone to drag you to the gym or physically snatch that bag of cookies from your hands. Motivation is like an emotion; it comes and goes like the wind. This is how you get motivation:
Discipline creates consistency
Consistency creates results
Results create motivation
Motivation creates MORE discipline
Rinse and repeat over and over until you reach your goals.
SEE VISIBLE PROGRESS: You will not always see visible progress. By visible progress, I mean the number on the scale drops. Or your jeans fall off because they are loose. Or your stomach looks flat finally. Sometimes (truthfully a LOT of times) your progress will be “hidden”. Things like more energy, better sleep, less stress, less aches and pains, and even less visible things like a more efficient metabolism, good hormone functions, lower blood sugar. Not all progress can be seen with the eyes!
MAKE COMPARISONS TO OTHERS: You are unique. So is your weight loss journey. As well as your reason for losing weight, your body composition, your genetics, your medical issues (if you have any). There is absolutely never a reason to compare yourself to someone else along the same path. Although you may be walking in the same direction toward the same end destination as others, the size of the steps taken, the detours you choose, the rests you stop to take will NOT be the same as theirs. It is your journey, and yours alone.
The things you want the most when it comes to weight loss are probably the things that are not supposed to happen at all. Knowing that and being ok with it will make your journey to being healthy and fit that much easier and enjoyable. We live in an Amazon Prime world with instant gratification. But a weight loss journey is not part of that world. Enjoy the process, enjoy the time it takes and what you learn about yourself along the way. It will be worth so much more to you than free 1 day shipping.
